All he can dictate is what official American maps call it. But he can't make everyone else rename it, Apple and Google did not need to rename it they could have ignored him who has no legal power to do anything to them but they are kissing his bronzed arse so of course they did.

Who has the authority to dictate what things should be called on a map if not the government? Tech companies are supposed to make these decisions? If they did nothing, that would be in defiance of the government, and most companies don't want to be involved in politics at all, regardless of who the President is.

No that's the point it would not be in defiance of the government because the government don't have the authority to tell private companies or individuals what bits of water should be called. All president has the authority to do is dictate what federal agencies call it.

The whole reason that everyone thinks this is a massive waste of time is precisely because he doesn't actually have the authority to force anybody to do anything. 20 years from now I highly doubt anyone is still going to be calling it the Gulf Of America, it's just a PR stunt to keep his supporters happy.

They don't need the authority. If the government says "this is x" and you say "no, this is y" that's defiance.
