I mean, put a small tax on it and it basically pays for itself. Don't even need to finance it upfront.

No. This revolutionary war was not fought over taxation alone but over taxation without representation. Give California a seat or two in the danish parliament.
Why would a US state with a GDP significantly larger than the country wanting to buy it allow it to be taxed?
To not to be part of the US anymore.
