This is the key. Behind Musk is Trump, behind him is We The People (e.g. if Trump disappeared then JD Vance would simply step in, or Donald Trump Jr, Desantis, Ramaswamy, Rubio, etc.), behind them is social media, and thereby Putin, and after him is climate change that we cannot afford to ignore while trying to get our house in order.
Perhaps this is why the Fediverse is so crucial to help stay independent of knowing only what "they" want us to know. Although so far the tools are only developing extremely slowly, and the vast majority of people seem to prefer e.g. the pretty Bluesky over the likes of Mastodon, Lemmy, Friendica, etc. And from the perspective of trying to find info on topics not related to which Linux distro to pick or casual chatting, I can see why: the content creators choose elsewhere more often than here.
But we do what we can to try to move forward as best we can.
