If you use an assistant, I don't, there still is the power menu access through the pulldown menu.
It is a dumb change, but the way I see it, most people don't use the side button power menu access much. Having the power menu being a swipe and tap away isn't much of a burden, but having an assistant access through less convenient means than the side button is a bigger burden for the typical use cases.
It's not much of a burden, but the problem is that it's still a burden. Holding the home button was never a less convenient means for accessing the assistant than holding the power button. No matter how you slice it, taking this option away makes for a worse user experience.
At least we aren't subject to Apple's vision where they decide how you use your phone for you and remove any options that conflict with their UI philosophy.
I bet there is a tweak that restores side button function to the old way.
