I assumed someone would go for the 40s, 60s, or 90s. You could at least point to the windfalls for the working class during these periods.
Real smug history types might throw back to the 1890s at the peak of industrialization or even the early 1400s, in the halcyon era prior to New World colonization.
But it's all relative to your personal situation.
