Billions? Why? It'd be online-only and be distributed through Hulu and Disney+. They already made streams for different genres on Disney+ so it truly can't be that expensive.
Because affiliates pay the networks a few billion a year in licence fees. But even more juicy is the cable and satellite retransmission fee, which is paid to the individual stations and then a share is passed up to the network. Retrans fees are worth around $20bn a year.
And advertisers have bought time based on broadcast’s impressive impression conversion to sales. Streaming is much less efficient at this, so ad time is much cheaper.
Well I was thinking of it being an online-only thing. That should make it way cheaper.
It also makes the ad time less valuable, and removes the income from affiliate licencing and retrans fees.
