While I‘m not against a digital ID per se (disclaimer: I’m not a British citizen), the reasons brought up for the ID don’t really persuade me. If you would want to fight illegal immigration (I wouldn’t), legal immigrants already need paperwork done, right? And fighting illegal work is usually not a problem of IDs but of enforcement. If a business is controlled once every 20 years it doesn’t matter, if there’s a digital ID or not. So I’m not really convinced by the reasons given. And I understand why the British citizens are asking questions.
