My hot water unit is finished, the gas pilot isn't staying on for more than 24 - 48 hours. The unit is from 1995. I've been told they don't usually last almost 30 years so this house did well with it. It's a fun game going into the shower on a cold winter's day and wondering if hot water is going to come out or if the pilot's gone off. Going to cost 2k to get replaced! Love these unexpected large expenses. Anyway, trying to not let it ruin my weekend. Things break, such is life.
Are you getting a heat pump one? Bloody love ours!
I didn’t even know about this option! I think it will be a big/$$ job to replace a system that runs on gas with one that runs on electricity. I’m tossing up between gas storage (what I have now) and gas instantaneous. Instantaneous is more expensive to install but it should be cheaper to run than storage? I don’t know, crap thing is you don’t have long to decide when it breaks.
I’d ditch gas entirely if I was you. Heat pump combined with solar power equals free hot water, basically.
I’m looking into it now. It definitely sounds like the most energy efficient option. There’s currently a $1000 rebate with Solar Victoria if you get a heat pump system installed, that will really help. Thanks for pointing me in this direction!
No worries. Good luck with it.
Your place you bought or rental?
I own my place, but I didn't know the water unit was that old and was heading towards breaking down when I bought. The new one I'm getting looks exactly the same.
Ah that’s unfortunate. Hope you’ll be able to afford a new one. Don’t know how I would be able to handle the cold. Maybe if the weather was 35C and it was like a 3 min freezing cold shower 😅
That brings back memories of '98. brr
What’s the story in ‘98?
