I'm thinking that those filter masks they wear can be gummed up by any thick liquid and cut off their air. Happened to me once or twice when working with a thin slurry refractory material inside a confined space. Just a thin layer of it would get on the inlet and prevent the flow of air through the canisters.
Just a thought.
