The lower picture is a laser pointer in a case with filter tips, these tips will break up the beam into shapes/symbols to be projected on the wall.

I have not thought of laser pointers for at least 15 years. I totally forgot how damn cool they were.

I have to use them professionally. That's why I got one in a different color from everyone else. Ok really it's that my old boss's boss had one a different color from everyone else and I didn't like the guy so I decided to be different too knowing that's exactly the kind of crap that gets under his skin. But also it's nice to have everyone know when you're the one laser pointing
I don't know how old you are, but these laser pointers, and the assorted different projection pattern caps, where the bee's knees when I was a kid.
