It's this way for everything. It's not which culture actually discovered something first but which culture had the systems to be remembered.

Columbus gets the credit for the first European to discover America even though Vikings did it first. Because Vikings didn't have the educational systems to carry that knowledge into the future.

Greeks get credit for so much because of their educational systems where knowledge was written and maintained in libraries.
