Owls like Nelson the white faced owl made an evolutionary trade off to hunt the way they do. They have soft, velvety feathers with specialized edges for silent flight so they can ambush their prey. However, as you can see in Nelson's showering, they are not particularly waterproofed, and lose their shape quickly when wet!

This does not dissuade any of owls from take a shower or bath, and they really enjoy a good dousing. It's a bit of a reward for the staff as well to have a moment with the bird watching them enjoy our company.

Had to squish down the file a good bit to get it small enough to upload. If you want to see it in MP4, I uploaded it to my Owl Stuff Vimeo.

I've never bathed an owl yet, but on the 90+ degree (32C) days, I'd see how the hawks would react when I'm spraying out their flight pens, and some seemed to enjoy a quick spritz or two.

The mention of "owl stuff vimeo" kinda makes me want to create "owlyfans.com"... No nudity(owl nudity ok) but just videos of owls and the various centers can accept donations.

I just checked owlyfans.com is already a site. Seems to just have a countdown which seems to be minutes at 1115 last I checked. If I'm right on minutes should be about 18 hours from now.

I know nothing about them or the content they plan... Just saddened someone else too the domain already.

Still roughly seems to be minutes, which puts it within several hours so either we be both be happy or sad tonight but the wait shouldn't be long

Good luck to anyone trying to get an owl to wear pants!

I don't think most people here typically want video or outside links, but sometimes I just find a video that's too good to just take a screen grab and it's nice for me to have a spot to toss it so you guys can see it since most come. From Facebook.

If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.
