Took out stair guard rail but now what (lemmy.nz)

Removed the plastic and wire guard rail that was put in originally and now I'm unsure what to replace it with. Any ideas?

What does the rest of the house look like? I'd try to match the time period. I.e. if victorian, then cast iron can be okay, if 50's or newer, bare/painted wood banister.
