I've been a GWAR fan since the 80s. My reasons for liking them have changed countless times over the decades.
In 2004 I was forced from the west coast to Virginia. Everything sucked. But then one day I saw a marquee. "Tonight GWAR."
It suddenly occurred to me that I now lived in the home state of GWAR. I could see them all the time. Things were suddenly looking up.
The last time I saw them was the year Dave died. They did "People who died." Drug needles and pills dancing around on stage in one of the most tasteless and insensitive displays I have ever seen. And it was everything that was GWAR. It was a truly cathartic moment being at a GWAR concert and being moved to tears of joy.
Years before I was at a different show. I see this guy with some weird hairline thing happening. I walk up. "I couldn't help but notice your hairline. What's the story?" "You are going to feel so bad about asking." "[Dude. You are at a GWAR show. That's not how this works.] I doubt that." "I've had multiple brain tumors. The scars have messed up my hair." "That's cool! So many people digging around in your skull and here you are still standing and going out to shows. I hope that you get to keep doing this."
GWAR hits you with the shock. It lulls you with the music. It's not a band. It's not an art group. It's all the things. 40+ years of everything.
That's awesome. It sounds like you like them for the reasons I assumed the fans did. I've never been to a GWAR show, but I think I'd enjoy it. I may have been thinking it, but what you said about the guy with the hair line, I feel like you can really be yourself at one of their shows, you're never gonna be as weird as the band, so everyone is accepted.
I have never seen an altercation at a GWAR show. I have a feeling that anyone even attempting to be a jerk would quickly be checked by everyone around them in a decisive way.
