I doubt it will ever happen. I'm waiting since 1.0 to be able to pet dogs...

At least you can feed dogs? In that one friendship boosting repeatable quest in Inazuma. With cats you can't even put them on the scratching tree you can (finally) craft for the teapot. (We also need a dog house for the teapot...)
