Is that... Saddam Hussein?

[–] wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 53 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (5 children)

Close, its related to the nutty putty cave rescue in which John Jones fell head first into a hole while cave crawling, got stuck, and couldn't be rescued and died stuck upside down

Guy gets trapped and dies in a horrifying way.

Have a look around

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 22 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Goddammit this comes back to haunt me like once a year, I swear.

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

First time I heard about it a few years ago I couldn't stop thinking about it for like a week. It was his fault, he used very bad judgement, but nobody deserves to die in such a horrible way.

[–] victorz@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I think about his two kids and wife as well, since I have a family of my own. Poor wife also endures online harassment apparently, since she remarried. So cruel.

If it's any consolation, they managed to get an IV in his leg and got him some anxiety and pain meds to make it a little easier.

[–] emergencyfood@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If they got to him before he died, why couldn't they pull him out?

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

This was his situation.

There wasn't enough room to pull him out, even with pulleys. IIRC, he died within about 36 hours so there wasn't enough time to drill him out or something like that.

Assuming a lack of preexisting issues (which I feel safe assuming because a spelunker is probably either suicidal or fairly healthy), what would cause one to die in 36 hours? I recently referenced this in another comment, but I learned that one can survive three minutes without oxygen, three days without water, or three weeks without food. 36 hours doesn't align with any of that.

The body is very good at keeping blood from pooling in your legs. Your muscles do a very good job of keeping fluid from building up. It's very bad at keeping the blood out of your upper half, because it normally relies on gravity.

When you're upside down for that long, there's a number of things that happen. Your organs squeeze your lungs, making it harder to breathe. Your brain starts to swell. And your heart can't keep up with the demand to pump fluid out of the chest and head and back into your legs, and eventually fails.

Guy actually lasted a really long time. Heart failure usually happens in less than a day of being upside down.

Cavers weird me out man. Its one thing to explore a cave you can walk around in, but like why go through passage that's barely big enough to fit through on your stomach?

[–] Admetus@sopuli.xyz 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He went the wrong way thinking it was a mapped area that involved a narrow passageway to a larger space. So you can go with confidence knowing there's an out.

Trouble is, he falsely identified and went down the wrong passageway, and moreover slid too far in.

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 month ago

No only that but he was way too big to be navigating those passages in the first place. Just a lot of bone headed decisions made by that guy.

In the same category of 'Guy is underground and is going to die soon'

[–] wetsoggybread@lemmy.world 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's a body underground innit?

[–] Saapas@piefed.zip 3 points 1 month ago

So is my gramps but not really close to that

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the nightmare fuel

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago

I think it's that guy that climbed into a cave in a space that he could not be extracted from.
