Don't think it is meant to be the date they are invented, but "how this thing was used in that year"
Sure, but then why those years? Why not some kind of pattern? It also seems like they're going to set up a before-and-after comparison, but they don't, it goes old toaster, old tv, old phone, new phone, new thermostat, new car, everything. The dates and the items are so arbitrary, it doesn't help them make their point imo.
