Copyright may have been useful to such leaches in the past, but now it stands in their way - which is why they are asking to 'water down' the laws.
I'd say that in most cases copyright is a good thing. There are some examples in which the law has been bent to some unfair end - particularly when 'special cases' are made for mega-corporations; but in most cases, copyright is just an automatic protection granted to the person who creates something.
