that was actually slightly before they went overboard with coke. the bigger problem during Easy Rider production was that literally everyone on set was stoned and they kept doing improvs and then their infinite wisdom led to shooting an actual acid trip on camera and incorporating that into the movie.

the original cut was a mess that went on almost literal forever and Hopper had no idea how to cut it down into a theatrical film because they strayed away from the script - basically they had the opening and the closing segments, but everything in-between required so taming, so Bob Rafelson brought in Henry Jaglom who did the editing and it was glorious - the whole jumpy swift-footed film structure was his invention and shaped the narrative around Whitman's Song of the Open Road.

And then the movie was gigantic success and everyone got on coke full time.

you're welcome. If you want more New Hollywood wacky shit - check out Easy Riders, Raging Bulls book - it is quite a read. And also - Robert Evans biography - he was the producer on many movies of that era and he was a walking carcrash
