I'm pretty sure self-hosting a single mastodon server where you're basically the only person on it likely costs less than 50$ per month...

That's a peanut for a million dollar company.

Firefox could probably create an account a Linux / open source focussed server or just the default mastodon server.

If you’re a company hosting anything you’re a target for hackers. You can’t just set up a server and call it a day. You have to take extra precautions that Joe Schmoe doesn’t have to worry about. And it’s a continuous effort, not one and done.

Oh no the million dollar company now has to maintain a server (likely 1-2h of dev/admin time per month) next to the hundreds of other servers that they already have...
