There are some days where I've done so much running that it becomes painful to walk, which only worsens if I don't rest, and I've recently had some issues with knee pains. How can these be mitigated/treated/avoided?

Easy.

Don't run. Running is for bomb-technicians.

Bike instead.

100%.

I used to run, but on my bike I can do 10x the kilometers, burning way more calories, and with very little knee pain or general soreness.
