What does that mean? Do you get taught wrong facts about the civil war? Do they tell you the indigenous were at fault? I would be really interested in details!
I was taught in school that Christopher Columbus discovered America and was the only one who believed the world was round when he set sail.
Is that propaganda or just lazy elementary level education?
That is incorrect, but how is that propaganda?
It gives the impression that Columbus was some genius who knew more than the rest of Europe (or the world at large.) It’s one small part of his heroic treatment in the US for so many years. The town I grew up in still has yearly parades in October commemorating him. (It’s sort of tied up in Italian pride, and there are a lot of proud Italians in that area. So, the celebrations go on.)
The issue people have with Columbus isn't really that they think he was the only one to know the world was round. The issue is more the atrocious handing of the native people he encountered.
I know. They're two sides of the same story, I just mentioned the side that's glorified.
I see nothing wrong in commemorating him. What is the problem with that? What does commemorating an historic figure have to do with propaganda?
He genocided thousands of natives. He's a piece of shit, lol.
That does not take away the relevance of his discovery.
He didn't discover America either.
People were there, it is obvious he was not the first human to get there. So what?
The fact that he went there significantly changed the lives of people living in Europe and people living in the Americas for the following centuries.
Yeah, and that is the damn problem. The change was for the worse.
A valid opinion, should history only record people who made great changes to the world and forget about the ones which did bad changes?
He discovered a land with hundreds of millions of people already living there. Then the Europeans genocided the fuck out of them. He should be remembered as one of histories greatest villains, not a fun adventurer.
Lol. What is he taught as? Do you know what the word propaganda means?
I dunno if you noticed but the definition has absolutely nothing to do with being in public office, lol. People are being persuaded into believing Columbus was a fun explorer and he's the reason civility was brought to the americas, when in fact the only export was barbarism, death, famine, and bloodshed.
You are not immune to propaganda.
I am afraid we understand the meaning of propaganda in a different way. Good and bad is a huge simplification, but I do agree with you on that.
I do not think this does push towards certain positions, for one because these are facts which happened a long time ago; even rewriting history completely about that time does not have a huge impact on current times in my opinion.
But sure, go ahead and call me stupid.
Lol.
Don't worry, I will!
Yea, I was taught the same in Europe, except for the round earth part.
That's what I grew up with as well in Germany.
It highly depends on what time you grew up and where. I'm not the best person to answer.
See the DARE program for an example.
