Fediverse vs Disinformation

2221 readers

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

The discussions are the latest example of the increasingly circular nature of AI financing. Nvidia has invested in [several companies] (https://www.cnbc.com/2026/05/09/nvidia-embraces-ai-investor-topping-40-billion-in-equity-bets-2026.html) that are also major customers for its chips, including a $30 billion investment in OpenAI in March and a $10 billion investment in Anthropic last year. The chipmaker has also backed multiple neocloud providers that rent Nvidia-powered computing capacity to customers. Nvidia has said those investments support the growth of the AI ecosystem while offering attractive long-term returns.

Cramer said the circularity of the arrangement reminded him of the late 1990s, when telecom equipment makers helped customers finance major purchases to fuel growth. While those deals initially boosted sales, he recalled that many unraveled when cash-strapped buyers could no longer pay, inflicting heavy losses on suppliers and investors alike.

I have had several articles about AI misinformation and disinformation removed from this community under the rationale "everybody knows already" which is a dangerous and condescending perspective to take on this. People believe AI is the future, the public has largely accepted narratives that hype and anthropomorphize AI, most who are against AI still believe it works and is nearing sentience when there is no evidence for it.

Research shows that people readily apply human traits to technical systems. In everyday conversation, that framing may be harmless. In policy, however, human-like framing can blur responsibility and reinforce the misconception that AI systems act independently of the people and institutions that design, build, configure, and deploy these systems. In policy contexts, unclear framing can obscure accountability, weaken implementation, and reinforce industry narratives that dilute oversight.

...

Humans reliably attribute human-like qualities to machines. The Eliza effect, coined in the 1960s, shows that users attribute empathy to simple pattern-matching dialogue.

...

Design choices also matter. Realistic voices, named personas, personality cues, and emotionally expressive chat output interfaces, can causally increase perceived human-likeness and trust, encouraging users to project human traits—including gender stereotypes—onto digital assistants. These features can make systems feel more helpful and trustworthy, but they can also encourage users to overshare, rely too heavily on the system, or form emotional attachments.

Researchers and journalists have documented cases in which prolonged interaction with companion-style chatbots appeared to intensify  delusional thinkingemotional reliance, and severe mental health deterioration. Large-scale behavioral data suggests that some heavy users of personalized chatbots report higher loneliness and emotional dependency over time. When users perceive AI systems as intentional agents, users may overweigh system outputs relative to other sources of information.

edit before anyone says discussion about the stock prices is perpendicular to discussions about disinformation/misinformation, no it isn't when we are talking about bubbles so big they are going to ruin countless peoples lives when it all goes up in smoke and fire.

... Cramer finally figured this out?

2 years late?

Jim Cramer, the guy who is so widely known as a sycophant and idiot, that people have literally made 'Anti-Cramer' funds and strategies that just figure out ways to make the exact opposite bets as him?

... that's it, thats the top.

Hope everyone has parachutes, we're all getting defenestrated now.
