[MS Teams | Fedora 44 kde] Persistent issues with output audio (lemmy.nz)

Hello, everyone. 👋

I experience a persistent issue with having no sound during the MS Teams meetings. Other meeting attendees can hear me and I don't hear them, which complicates communication significantly. The volume bar in the settings is also greyed out.

Usually, I access MS Teams meetings via the links that are shared with me. I don't have a Teams / Microsoft account either. I have tried to access meetings via browsers (Brave, LibreWolf with relaxed settings, even Chrome and Edge) and teams-for-linux app.

I have tested pretty much all the possible Sound profiles and only Duplex seems to be recognized by Teams (I see Built-In Audio Analog), just it seems inactive for output sound. The pavucontrol settings seem fine. The system sounds work fine. I can listen to music etc. with the current settings. The issue seems to be isolated to MS Teams specifically.

System.: Linux Fedora 44 kde

Hardware: Lenovo Y530 laptop.

I guess you are new to reporting issues, so lets clear some things up

That is irrelevant and doesnt tell us HOW you use teams.

Teams is a web app, which browser? There is also an electron wrapper which basically gives you a chromium browser with a webapp with elevated privileges and more local storage. I would highly recommend to only use Teams in Firefox or Brave as it is malware and will absolutely try to spy on you.

And then the next question, how did you install the app? KDE discover shows you the source, so please tell us.

If it is a flatpak (which I assume), try this

flatpak list --installed --app

In case you run the electron app as a flatpak (if there are no big reasons for this please just use it in the browser), this might be a pulseaudio issue.

The microphone might be accessed via pipewire (which is good for privacy as otherwise any app could spy on you without you knowing) or directly via hardware somehow.

In systemsettings, to to application permissions and flatpak permissions (they hid that away which is annoying). You can just search for "flatpak" in the menu and it leads you to the settings page.

There you could see if the app (which I dont recommend) has no pipewire access.

It might be a different issue totally. You also only mentioned teams without mentioning anything similar. If you install Brave or other apps, does sound output work?

Have you tried selecting something else than "duplex" for output?

Odd, as you are on fedora, a wild guess is teams might use DRM or a nonfree audio codec like eac3 (and afaik aac too, which is sadly the standard for many things).

Try installing libavcodec-freeworld from rpmfusion or better use their approach to replace ffmpeg with the full variant and install the freeworld codecs.

Teams is a web app, which browser?

LibreWolf (flatpak; pipewire access granted). Tested to access Teams meetings with relaxed settings, which didn't work well. I receive Teams links to an email service open in LibreWolf, too. Usually, I copy links to open them in Brave (Chromium -based).

Brave Origin (non-flatpak installation). Tested to access meetings with relaxed settings. Worked, just there was no output sound. Switched from Brave. Honestly, the issue may have started when I have switched to Brave Origin.

Other tested browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Edge; flatpak installations).

And then the next question, how did you install the app?

Via Discover, flatpak. I haven't checked the pipiwire access before. I have now uninstalled it as I'd prefer a browser access to meetings.

If you install Brave or other apps, does sound output work?

Yes. YouTube and system sounds work well.

Have you tried selecting something else than "duplex" for output?

Yes. I have tried all the profiles. When I select other profile than Duplex, I usually get an notification "Are you sure you want to attend the meeting with no audio and video?".
