So while I agree with many of your comments, I would say people who are not computer people don't know anything about the things that you listed. Sure there's other email servers than Google, but here's the thing do people know that? When you buy an Android phone it forces you into a Google login. There's no other way around it. And then most people just use that because that's what they know. The same thing with RSS, I would not begin to know where to even find a community that is on RSS. Like what does that even mean? most people don't know what all of these things that you listed mean. And it's not because we're lazy, it's because those things like Gmail and Reddit are easy to access Before I got IP band from Reddit I had no idea that lemmy or the fediverse existed. I still don't know how to make a category that I can post on. I have no idea how to make a server, I don't have the money to buy extra computer stuff to do anything other than use my phone. People who program software and are computer programers understand the back end. Those of us who don't have any idea of any kind of programming don't know how to use anything but what is readily available. And yes I'm trying to learn but it's not easy.
If they cared at all, they would find out.
