AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
Back in my first year (2008) we had these mandatory online assignments for physics and calc (think it was springer or something). Some of us would group up to work through things which ended up making our study groups. One of my friends at the time used to do all of theirs in excel and upload them (I was in residence at the time and there was a gigantic peer to peer filesharing network on campus) for everyone to use, I know there were a ton of people who didn't even touch the homework without them.
It's definitely not a new thing for sure.
