even if moderates are victorious in the primaries

Just tell the DNC to ratfuck the primaries again, the people will obediently vote for the people happy to fund ICE at home and genocide abroad. There's no way telling the dems they can do whatever they want without risking lower turnout can backfire.

History time.

Frederick Douglas was an escaped slave who became one of the most influential speakers of his time. In 1860 he had a choice. He could support an Abolitionist candidate for President, or he could throw in with Lincoln. Abe had said that he supported the Union over abolition. Douglas figured it was better to win and have a seat at the table than to lose.

Kind of skews the actual conversation.

Even when Dems win I don’t feel like I have a seat at the table.

At best I feel like I’m at the kids’ table. “That’s nice that you want that, sweetie. Now eat your veggies and maybe there will be pie”

[-] SaltyAmerican@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

The working class will never have a seat at their table, they use us as pawns to elect them and stay in power then toss our needs aside after the election.

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Did progressives get a seat at the table with Biden? No, it just told the DNC they could do deeply unpopular things and still win.

4 years later, we had more deportions than ever plus genocide under Biden and now we get genocide and deportations to El Savvadorian concentration camps under Trump.

[-] protist@retrofed.com 6 points 2 months ago

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARPA) was arguable the most progressive piece of legislation since Lyndon Johnson's Great Society. Progressives absolutely had a table in Biden's presidency, especially at the beginning. There's a reason Bernie Sanders threw his full-throated support behind him.

I would very much agree he seemed to move further right over 4 years though, and his response to the Gaza genocide was really telling. And his cognitive capacity definitely decreased

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 1 points 2 months ago

Did the ARPA help you personally or anyone you know, personally?

I don't know anyone who actually got their student loans paid off.

[-] tburkhol@slrpnk.net 4 points 2 months ago

ARPA paid my health insurance premiums, in full, until this year.

[-] protist@retrofed.com 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Oh man, ARPA funded so many social service programs. Homeless services and public health in particular were hit hard when the Trump admin cancelled ARPA funding last year. Emergency shelters, rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, outreach, vaccination programs, medical programs for people without insurance, and the list goes on and on, this is just off the top of my head right now

Most of this money was distributed to local governments for local programs

[-] jumjummy@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago

Are you trying to Both Sides this? What nonsense.

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 5 points 2 months ago

I am saying the DNC taking the left's votes for granted allowed them to justify the policies that lost them the election.

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 3 points 2 months ago

John Brown was also an influential speaker of his time. A really cool dude. Though what happened to him shows that the US citizenry never had the stones to fight for what they believe in. They only think they do.

[-] stickly@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Well at least one contemporary disagrees

[John Brown] was with the troops during that war, he was seen in every camp fire, and our boys pressed onward to victory and freedom, timing their feet to the stately stepping of Old John Brown as his soul went marching on. — Frederick Douglass

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social -1 points 2 months ago

If you favor the 'John Brown' solution, why aren't you in Gaza or Ukraine right now?

Here you go.

Just apply for a credit card.

Surely a dedicated warrior like yourself wouldn't balk at running up some bills?

Anything else I can help you with?

https://www.capitalone.com/

Now what's your excuse?

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

Sure. Can you provide sufficient liquid F~2~ whose gaseous form can achieve 500 ppm over a diameter of 50 kilometers? A sufficiently powerful smoke machine which can achieve this concentration over that area using the provided F~2~ is also required. These materials must be transferred to the center of Moscow undetected.

Think you can whip up that grocery list for me? Or do you have an excuse?

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 0 points 2 months ago

You've got the credit card, get cracking!

I think we're done here.

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 1 points 2 months ago

The F~2~ sellers will have me killed if I try to buy it from them, since I'm on the US government's kill list. It would be impossible to use my credit card, since the government would drop a bomb on my head as soon as I go to collect the goods.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

Got it. You're so dangerous you're on the government's kill list, but too moral to do a little credit card fraud.

John Brown was a wanted man when he went to Harper's Ferry.

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 2 points 2 months ago

Ol' John Brown didn't envelop the entire Eastern Seaboard with toxic psychedelic gas, putting him on said kill list, though.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

No one in history has needed to touch grass as hard as you do.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

I'm sure you've gone from mildly amusing to boring and borderline creepy.

[-] I_Jedi@lemmy.today 0 points 2 months ago

Isn't that a contradiction? Creepy is undetectable with sufficient boredom.

[-] DagwoodIII@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

I bow to your expertise.

I'm sure you know more about being creepy and being a bore than anyone else.
