Imagine if a company could figure out exactly how desperate you are for a job...

Then use AI to offer you the lowest salary they think you'll accept.

That's the idea behind wage surveillance.

Companies are collecting more data than ever before, from AI interviews and online activity to your location and personal information, all in an effort to make hiring cheaper. The less they think you'll push back, the less they have to pay.

Umm, this ain't exactly new

They don't need your personal data for this, they already know the value of a role, and will always offer the lowest.

My personal data will have little relevance if I've done my research into the value of a role. They can offer what they think I want, but if I know their actual range, and where my skillset falls, I can put forth what I want, not some minimum.

This is what bothers employers today - they know that data is now easy to come by for potential hires.

It's not new, but you're wrong about personal data not factoring in. Companies will absolutely try to low ball you if you're unemployed, or offer you less if you volunteer your current salary, or offer you more if you're getting other offers.

This new stuff is a problem because they're going to end up colluding through software just like landlords and it should obviously be illegal but they'll get away with it until people catch on and the law catches up, or forever depending on location.
