I would love to see him get acquitted...then walk out of the courtroom and straight up admit that he did it, to all the media waiting for a statement.

Double jeopardy, bitch!

Double jeopardy doesn't prevent him from being liable for civil damages. The family could sue and ruin his life still.

Don't forget how the OJ trial went.

I’d argue a lot of that life ruining stuff was his own doing and not him losing in civil court haha.

Did he ever actually pay?

[–] procrastitron@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

He delayed using various tactics, but ultimately his estate did pay.

I only saw him dispose of a parasite, no human was harmed.

I mostly remember the billionaire reactions about it.

Musk, Don Jr and others. At first my impression is, why they are so vocal about it, it is unrelated to them, then I realized that they see themselves as a different class (not plebs like us) and in their eyes this was a class war and somebody from the plebs killed someone in the Epstein class scared them shitless.

I'm surprised this is the first time it's happened in recent memory.

They'd given us enough bread and circuses to prevent it. What surprises me is that there weren't any copycats - perhaps they were foiled by increased security or just not reported on.

Musk for a while started wearing his son like a helmet.

That's not how Double Jeopardy works. You'd be introducing new evidence which could be used to appeal and retry the case.

Mangione is also open to both federal and state charges. So he's going to go from one courtroom directly into another.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

The second point is correct but the first is completely wrong.

Only convictions can be appealed in criminal cases, nor acquittals.

[–] homura1650@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

That is exactly how double jeopardy works. New evidence is not grounds to appeal an acquittal.

The dual sovereignty doctrine between state and federal charges is a loophole around double jeopardy though.

Triple jeopardy. He's got two murder trials to get through.

There are other bad consequences that could strike if he did that. Better to STFU.
