Since Meta launched its AI-powered Ray-Bans, which can record video and audio as well as make calls, there’s been a growing privacy backlash against the specs, with many dubbing them “pervert” glasses after they were reportedly used to film people without their consent. (...)

Never one to miss an opportunity to take a public swipe at big tech, the alternative search engine DuckDuckGo has now launched a new range of glasses in collaboration with the San Diego firm Knockaround (...)

The twist: with their permanent offline mode, zero cameras and mics, no AI or electronics of any kind, the “California cool” Paso Robles have been hailed as "the world's most innovative anti-surveillance sunglasses," AKA "Normal F***ing Sunglasses” according to Knockaround’s website.

won't work so well unfortunately.

LEDs are typically powered via PWM which can be easily ignored through shutter speeds.

I suppose you could have three differently timed sets of LEDs at randomly overlapping frames. though that itself would be difficult to maintain due to loose coupling and synchronization. you can see it happen with metronomes. electrical oscillators are similar and can be effected by other nearby components.

Couldn't you just power them 100% of the time?

sure, but the only reason why LEDs are energy efficient is because of the PWM. they're also designed to only operate at engineered runtimes too.

so not only will you need larger more energy dense batteries to run them, you'll also only get half or even quarter the runtime out of them for running them at 100% of their runtime spec.

This is similar to the swiss cheese theory for masking. It doesn't have to be perfect. There just needs to be enough on at any given time to distort the image. Add a couple bonus sets if we're concerned with an entire set losing sync.

A place for all those who loathe AI to discuss things, post articles, and ridicule the AI hype. Proud supporter of working people. And proud booer of SXSW 2024.

AI, in this case, refers to LLMs, GPT technology, and anything listed as "AI" meant to increase market valuations.
