The most novel book I have read has been Hagakure. I am not sure how unique it is; are there any other books written by a samurai at the end of the era of samurai? Dude had kind of a unique perspective on war and life as a warrior in a time where his class was no longer really needed. IIRC he wanted to perform ritual suicide when his lord died, but was forbidden from doing so as the culture rapidly changed and the practice was outlawed. He wrote the book because he didn't really have much else to do.
