Spotify does that for a while especially for playlists that are played in the background where you do not actively listen to generate lots of plays. That way they do not have to give artists as much money as their own cut they take for themselves grows. If you go through background playlists https://open.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DX4Oe8zprVH3z most of the "artists" have little to no background information.
