It’s not just celebrities. It’s friends too. I’m one of the weirdo normies on here. Yes I know my way around Linux, I choose not to use it. My friends hate all the BS and rage against AI and the horrors of the tech oligarchs, guess where they post their anger? Facebook, Instagram, Threads, Twitter- basically where everyone lives. So where do you post and follow? Where your friends exist.

I love the Fediverse, but I also know that they won’t come here. Even without it being an “easy” signup, no one is here. No one builds a house in a desert. Even intentional communities need to be near infrastructure to stay in their bubble. I love my bubble, but I’d starve if it was my only resource. Some friends will use it sparingly, but the majority of their posts/life events go on mainstream social media. And anyone in the EU knows that WhatsApp isn’t going anywhere as far as messaging and calls.

Bluesky is just weird. Honestly, I never open it and plan to just delete it. The same people are on Threads anyway. It falls in some weird middle ground that attracted the appalled users of Twitter who expected everyone to come and when they didn’t, well, they slowly trickled back. It’s an echo chamber because it’s dying- empty spaces echo. And it doesn’t have the personality that Mastodon has to keep a loyal following.

Anyway, just my thoughts. As long as the masses stay in a comfortable space and feel some sense of autonomy, that’s the space that will hold the most people. And places like the Fed will exist on the periphery because there are always people that want to be there too. But I have a hunch that there are many that continue on both because social media was meant to be, well, social. And the middle ground places that pop up to market on rage will slowly fade into the background.
