Yes but that line will never receive feature updates again, only kernel compatibility and security fixes. That also means there is no chance for any VRAM usage improvements on a driver level anymore.

Fair enough, but I wouldn't call it abandoned just yet. Long-term support on Linux is clearly a big advantage of AMD/Intel open source drivers :)
