Any genres in mind? Shattered Pixel Dungeon is a pretty fun one, IMO. I like Idle Fantasy for its vaguely RuneScape feel (though it's largely text-based, so don't expect much graphics) while letting you queue actions up for hours of letting the game run idly. 2048 is classic. Luanti (similar to Minecraft) is available on mobile but such a huge battery drain I haven't played it much TBH. And UnCiv will let you play a game similar to Civilization. I have all those on e/OS (de-Googled Android fork) and as I recall they are all open-source and ad free.
I've been playing Idle Fantasy for the last few weeks and have been enjoying it, though the obvious flaws due to it being vibe-coded are getting annoying. Stuff like the same UI working in different ways in different parts of the app, achievements not being persistent so you lose them when you prestige, constant patches for bonuses not being applied due to Claude missing them, or the balance being absolutely terrible (not that that matters much for an idle game, but stuff like grinding bosses earning hundreds of millions of coins a day while the second best option would struggle to hit half a million, or firemaking being a completely worthless skill since you'll collect bones to bury by the hundreds of thousands, or all but like five loot items - including ones dropped by the final boss - being worth less than a single ore).
I hope it gets a serious polish and balancing patch soon, and that the author stops using Claude to add new features.
Ugh, I had suspected it might be vibe coded, but was living in denial. That is a bummer. I have much the same hopes; I don't super care about balance for an idle single-player game, because I just like numbers go up, and I do actually use firemaking a fair amount because ashes are good for farming and runecrafting, but in general I agree with you.
Wait, ashes have a use beyond prayer xp? It doesn't seem to explain that anywhere, so I've left the skill at 1 since I've been tripping over bones (seriously, the most expensive church bonus costs 300 and I have over a million), and haven't done runecrafting either since I also have over a million of those from boss drops and the strongest spell costs four.
Oh yeah, you can use them for increasing the output per-rune for runecrafting, for increasing the yield of harvests when farming, and for enhancing potions when potion crafting. I like it for runecrafting because it seriously reduces the time it takes to meet guild and quest quotas, and I haven't done tests on this to confirm, but farming says you get XP per crop and I believe that makes it an XP multiplier when harvesting crops. Plus farming dailies can get you a lot of XP, and you can contribute to those from inventory, so having a larger stockpile of crops helps a lot. I've prestiged Farming twice and timing it right with guild dailies can launch you from one to like level fifty in a single batch of dailies.
