It probably does, but for the future I'll tell you what I learned before I ever go the chance to innocently experience this:

First starve them so that they eat the dead skin they normally wouldn't.

Then, the fact that they can't be sanitized comes into play - you either get fish with other people's feet muck, or if they give you a new batch, the old one is just thrown away.
