MODERATORS
Vast majority of animals alive today either have learnt to avoid humans, or simply do so naturally, that's partly why they survived into the modern day.
The fact that there have hardly been any bites, even acidentally, in recent times seems to me to be a function of their impending extinction, rather than the behaviour of the snakes themselves. If they were abundant, people might get bit a lot more.
Outside the UK they in fact are extremely abundant, found across the whole of Europe and most of Asia. Bites are just extremely rare.
