An hour of labor definitely went up in price, it just doesn’t show on the paycheck side. Unless you look at the withholdings, some of it’s there.

I realized a while ago that I can’t afford to hire myself.

I heard that phrase when I was young, about people in some poor place making shoes. They can't afford what they make. I can't afford myself either and never had at any point in my career, but this seems like a thing of capitalism.
