facts are uncivil now?

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?

idk, lemmy.ml mod account

  1. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?

community ban, removed comments

  1. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).

above

  1. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).

above

  1. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

it's just pointing out that the soviet union was not a perfectly fair socialist democracy as they think it was, I'd appreciate an unban

yeah I was told I had pro-capitalist and pro-fascist views for criticizing the supreme leader

This person is trolling you. The way .ml do threads is they sealion you into cringe prolonged debates and then invent talking points to pin on you. Enable instance suffixes on your app so you can just know who you're talking to. And don't trust people who go "explain to me, explain to meee". That's not a thing human adults do.

When someone tries the sealioning trick, the correct response is always - "I think this would be more productive if you elucidate on why you feel this point needs further exploration."

We had an academic who spent a lot of time sealioning in our department; this is how we dealt with him.

Maybe. At that point I'm usually just no longer interested in interacting. I suppose in academics it makes sense but I find any sort of competitive discussion on internet pretty pathetic. Especially when it's about things like personally held beliefs, which is kind of a weird currency to be making bets with. And usually you're not going to convince a random internet person to respect anything they don't already hold by default because they are playing out a personal fantasy of some kind. "Changing my mind when presented with compelling info" isn't really a fantasy master-debate bros really have.

Obviously there's exceptions but most people aren't online doing this "joust with me in front of a crowd" bit because they have the social skills to interact with strangers irl.

I honestly wasn't. Based on how many that were removed by mods and not in the mod log really seems like the comments in the log weren't the worst removed and ops responses haven't suggested otherwise

~~I've seen their modlog, yeah there's bad actors but .ml are clearly playing fuckfuck games. Sorry for saying you were trolling. I haven't looked at op's comment history but it seems like this is always the thing we tell new people and it's pretty gaslight-y~~

I've completely misread this entire post and mischaractarized you. I'm sorry.

I've seen too many people go ape shit against ml for their terrible comments since it's such a common occurrence of them doing it then coming here to complain sadly

[-] sad_detective_man@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Fair, I've seen the pattern too. I let my own feelings with the .ml broken-stair issue override due diligence here

But beria wasn't ever that?

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.
