Jesus. Every "Our autocorrect escaped it's sandbox and is gonna go skynet any second now" Is just scaremongering. Every time the tech CEOs go "we are looking into this. Oh and we can't relase our next model to the public because it's too powerful, and we need governmental limits on training." Why on earth would a CEO of for profit company say that, if they finally are that close to their mythical AGI that could make them trillions?

The truth is that have hit a wall, they hit a wall years ago in training and inference and most AI progress has been just better harnesses and other auxiliary software and they are just bleeding money for every small gain that they make with training. They just can't admit to that, so they need the Uncle Sam to play the villain and "stop them or at least slow them from winning too much" so they have an excuse to not deliver what they know that they cannot. So they pull off these "our AI escaped it's sandbox, and caused virulent flame war on r/Europe and then proceeded to short some Kazakhstani corn futures. We barely stopped it when it was gnawing at Pentagon firewalls." type of stunts. If a single company says that they are slowing down development for safety (to stop bleeding money before it's too late) then their jig is up, they lose investors and go belly up with their debts in months. However if the whole field is frozen with a government mandate from on high, then the companies can stop bleeding money collectively. Maybe then the field and US economy can be saved from the AI bubble.

i wonder how we could behave to hasten the collapse. Like, start making even more unreasonable expectations on what llm can do so people get even more disappointed when they cant deliver. Or something else.

Convincing people that llm is bad doesnt seem to work if they already have positive opinion about it, but if they instead feel betrayed by the company that provides them their magic machines then in best case scenario they might become more critical towards corporations as a whole.

It’s not scaremongering, it’s advertisement.
