To someone who is knowledgeable about this: how important is a fibula to the actual strucural integrity of the body?

As I understand it, it is primarily used to point the foot.

Well it's the attachment point for the muscles that do that and other balance related movements.

Relatively little for most people. It helps with ankle stabilization, but lots of people break their fibula and don't even notice. If you're an athlete who does a lot of lateral motion, it's fairly important.
