Amazon Prime Video announced on Thursday that it is producing a live-action series adaptation of Hyuganatsu and Touko Shino's The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) light novel series that will stream exclusively worldwide on Amazon Prime Video in 2028. I find myself enjoying anime for the animation style alone, not once I thought about wanting it recreated into a liveaction series. But when I do try watch a live action remake, I found it to be the most disappointing, with the art direction and the animated expressions not properly being supplemented to something else from the directors. I remember seeing the live action remake of Death Note, and thought how they tried to act like anime characters outside of the anime medium, finding it to be really, really unnatural

Does anyone know of a good live-action remake? I am open to the idea, but admittedly I’ve seen pretty bad ones 😅

First, recognize that most of these are live action adapted from manga or light novel, not anime.

Once you recognize that, there are tons of manga/ranobe witch live-action adaptation, and no anime adaptation at all.

There are tons of good live-action adaptation, but mostly only with realistic settings. Shoujo, josei, and seinen media gets live-action adaptation, but not anime.

Some example of good one:

  • Nodame Cantabile
  • City Hunter (any version are interesting, from Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Hongkong (with Jackie Chen), even French live-action adaptation)
  • Alice in Borderland (had so many changes from the manga, especially for games that are too Japanese, possibly to make it easier for global audience?)
  • Great Teacher Onizuka
  • Gokusen
  • Bloody Monday

One piece live action is pretty solid imo.

The only example I can think of off the top of my head are the live action Rurouni Kenshin movies. In my opinion, they are excellent and the best way to consume the story.
