the longtime convention of U.S. administrations avoiding direct involvement in other countries’ elections.

When has the US ever not interfered in the elections of other countries? Nothing but AI could be that delusional. Trump is flouting some conventions but in this regard, there is nothing to flout.

I think you underestimate how delusional humans are. Also, the point here is direct involvement, usually they're more subtle.
