Downloading maps question (sh.itjust.works)

I have 1 TB of storage on my phone, sometimes it's more than I know what to do with.

So I downloaded every map available in CoMaps. Every. Single. Country.

The result is about 92.1 GB of storage being taken up, for those who are curious

The thing is though, every time a new map update comes out, CoMaps makes me re-download all 92.1 GB of my downloaded maps all over again.

For example, let's say a new map update comes out, and instead of being 92.1 GB, it is now 92.2 GB. Even though there was such a small increase, all my maps from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe and everything in between have to be re-downloaded.

Not only is it annoying for me, but I feel like it strains CoMaps's servers when I tell it to download almost 100 GB of map data every week or two and I feel bad for it

So basically, when there's an update for some of your maps, it won't just grab the new information, it will also re-download all the old information it already had before it seems. Not sure if this is a bug or a feature with a valid reason for being implemented

Has anyone else noticed this or experienced this?

Are you clicking the "Update All" button?

I just click the (yellow) updates I want for a specific region that I'll be visiting soon - ie like the 8MB "World Overview (Coastlines)"

Or have I misunderstood?

No not exactly, it's just that like I said in my post, I downloaded every single available map, so I do tap "update all" instead of tapping on every country in the list.

In reality, I should just be updating my home country and that's it and that's my solution. I just have more than enough storage capacity on my phone to download all countries on earth.

And I know it's silly. It's just something for me. Like, I enjoy thinking about how I could be anywhere at all in the world, and as long as I have my phone, I can navigate anywhere I need with no internet needed.

Our phones should be thought of more as tools, and downloading all these maps helps me feel that sentiment more

Ah, ok, yeah, I think I was just trying to find a solution for you, rather than yeah, enjoy the "planet in the palm of your hand" thing 🙂

Try OSMAnd from FDroid too. You can re-download the planet there and I'm fairly sure the updates are more incremental

Plus, it would be nice to know the storage difference 😉
