My dog has bad separation anxiety. How do I help him? (reddthat.com)

He gets very distressed and barks incessantly when anyone leaves the house. Even the jingle of keys or when you stand up and put a jacket on sets him off. He also won't go for a walk unless at least 2 people in the house go with him. The only exception is my dad who he will walk alone with.

He's just never content unless everyone is at home. Are there any ways we can help him to get used to being separated for periods of time?

Most comments already said the most important things. For my dog, it took months to get her assured that we will return. We had a lot of success with doing a routine when we are leaving. We put her on the bed, say goodbye and then we put a snack or two next to her, which she isn't allowed to get, while we are in the room. As soon as I am out of the room, she is allowed, so me leaving is somewhat of a cool thing to happen. Also don't be too dramatic when you leave the dog and also when you come back. Treat it as a normal thing.. it will take time but most dogs learn it after a while. Just be patient. Good luck
