Also, get to know your neighbors. Most people are decent, and a semi-organized group willing to stand up for each other is a hell of a lot harder to oppress.
Also, I'd suggest reading "that nonviolent stuff will get you killed." It's about the role firearms played in the civil rights struggle. Super interesting read.
Building community is just as important, if not moreso.
