Part of the problem is that when you work with children there's always a moment that makes you consider it. When 3 or 4 are going off on one at the same time there's just a second where it comes to mind before you dismiss it as unreasonable.
When you're low paid and have shitty management those times tend to be a lot more common and you have fewer tools to deal with them. Eventually, when you run out of reasonable alternatives, it starts to look a lot less unreasonable.
