A local fruit-fly simulation combining a physical NeuroMechFly body in MuJoCo, MaleCNS connectome data, and explicit behavioral controllers.

The main hybrid mode supports walking, odor-guided food search, contact-based feeding through an articulated proboscis, grooming, sleep pressure, and waking. A separate two-fly arena adds shared food, body collisions, pushing, foreleg fencing, and retreat. These behaviors combine simulated physiology with engineered decisions and motor programs. This is an experimental model, not a physiologically validated digital fly.

This is Google's summary about why they're doing this research:

The common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has been central to scientific research leading to multiple Nobel Prizes. Fruit flies have been a fundamental model organism in genetics, thanks to their stereotypical behavior and short life cycle, and promise to do the same for neuroscience. While the thoughts of this fruit-loving insect might seem far removed from human cognition, the brains of vastly different species share many similarities. Because mapping the 86 billion neurons in a human brain is not yet possible, scientists are using AI to map the brains of smaller organisms, like fruit flies. This will help us decipher how animal nervous systems perceive the world, react to stimuli, and how damaged neural pathways might one day be repaired.

Wait, does this simulate fly behavior by simulating a fly brain?

Edit: it looks it simulates pieces of a fly brain

The prepared graph retains 166,700 annotated non-glial entries and all 25,582,938 connection rows between them

Two 96 x 96 cameras provide approximate retinal input.

But at certain points it looks like the neural network hands off to human-programmed stuff

Descending activity is converted to gait commands, while FlyGym supplies an engineered walking controller. Motor neurons are not individually mapped to muscles. In hybrid mode, food search, behavioral arbitration, and escape detection also contain engineered logic.
