The saddest part is that academics don't like obscure language either. No one does. They use it either because they have to (e.g. it actually makes things clearer) or because they feel they have to.

I'm gonna pin that "they feel they have to" on English teachers, many of whom seem to enjoy taking out their grammar hobby on their students.
