It's both in my opinion. I'm originally from South East Asia and I don't know much about my neighbours, but people in home country love repetitive love stories, slap stick comedies and shallow jokes, although I heard few similar complaints from other South East Asians. But in any case, these kind of media is popular in the region. It occurred to me that with how difficult life is for many people in South East Asia, they don't want to be reminded more how tough it is by watching thought-provoking existential dramas, which Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong media have generated and is famous for. The East Asians are richer, more educated and have more material security so they have more time to think.
